Today, I’d love to share with you a fantastic tiny studio in New Your City I found in the spectacular Brazilian Blog ACHADOS DE DECORAÇÃO. I was so impressed by this masterpiece of Decó that I traced the source for further information and got to the New York Times note about the apartment. I need to share it with you, and translate it to my spanish-speaking readers because the history of the owner of this lovely space is AMAZING!
Malena Georgieva, a native of Plovdiv, Bulgaria, a provincial city about an hour from Sofia, received a degree in Soviet-style industrial management just as the Soviet Union was collapsing. Adapting to the post-Communist world after emigrating to the United States in 1993, she enrolled in a master’s program at the University of New Haven, supporting herself as a hotel chambermaid for $4.50 an hour. Eventually, she was hired by Deloitte & Touche, beginning a career in risk management, and her simultaneous love affair with New York City.
e Hoy me encantaría compartir con ustedes un pequeño estudio fantástico en la ciudad de New York que encontré en el espectacular Blog Brasilero ACHADOS DE DECORAÇÃO. Me quedé tan impresionada con esta obra maestra de la Decó que rastreé la fuente hasta dar con la nota sobre el departamento en el New York Times. Quiero compartirla con ustedes y traducirla para todos los lectores hispanohablantes ya que la historia de la dueña de este espacio es IMPRESIONANTE!. Malena Georgieva, nativa de Plovdiv, Bulgaria, una ciudad provincial a una hora de Sofía, se graduó en Administración Industrial de corte Soviético, justo mientras la Unión Soviética colapsaba. Adaptándose al mundo post-comunista, luego de emigrar a Estados Unidos en 1993, se enroló en un Master de la Universidad de New Haven, manteniéndose como mucama de hotel por $4,5 la hora. La firma Deloitte & Touch la contrató, dando comienzo de esta manera a su carrera en administración de riesgos, y su affair simultáneo con la Ciudad de New York.
But Ms. Georgieva had another dream: to become an artist and designer. So she took continuing-education courses in interior design at New York University, and then set up her own firm. Two days after it opened for business in 2008, the economy took a nose dive. Clients weren’t exactly beating down her door, so she went back to work in risk management and put her design efforts into her home, a tiny space down the block from the Dakota, on West 72nd Street. The fourth-floor apartment, for which she pays $1,750 a month, consists of a single room, just over 200 square feet, with a bed, a desk, a dining table and a couple of swivel chairs.
e Pero Ms. Georgieva tenía otro sueño: el de convertirse en una artista y diseñadora. Para ello, tomó cursos de educación contínua en Diseño de Interiores en la Universidad de New York, y luego desarrolló su propia firma. Dos días después de abrir su negocio en 2008, la economía se zambulló de naríz. Los clientes no estaban golpeando a su puerta exactamente, así que regresó al rubro de administración de riesgos y puso sus esfuerzos decorativos en su hogar, un pequeño espacio bajando la calle desde el Dakota, en West 72nd Street. El departamento en un edificio de 4 pisos, por el que paga una renta mensual de U$S 1.750, consiste en un monoambiente, de 20m2, equipado con una cama, un escritorio, un comedor y un par de sillones giratorios.
It is essential that they swivel, it allows them to face the dining area, the sleeping area or the living area, depending on how Ms. Georgieva is using the apartment. The Tirup chairs cost nearly $400 each at Ikea, making them far and away the most expensive furnishings in the space. Some items cost $12 (a glass cheese platter that she turned into a tabletop) or $40 (table legs, from Ikea, on which she mounted a board upholstered in imitation leather from the fabric emporium Mood). One substantial expenditure was for lumber, with which she and her father, a retired engineer who visited from Plovdiv, built the queen-size platform bed. All in all, she spent about $1,500. Given that she would like to open a design firm again someday, and can’t deplete her savings, her frugal decorating is just another form of risk management.
e Es escencial que sean giratorios, ya que ello permite a las sillas enfrentar el comedor, el área del dormitorio y las demás áreas comunes, dependiendo de cómo Ms. Georgieva esté utilizando el departamento. Los sillones giratorios costaron U$S 400 cada uno en Ikea, transformándolos por lejos en los muebles más costosos del departamento. Algunos items costaron U$S 12 (un plato para quesos de vidrio que ella transformó en superficie de mesa) o U$S 40 (las patas de la mesa de Ikea, sobre las que montó un tablero tapizado en ecocuero del emporio de las telas Mood). Un gasto importante fue destinado a la madera, con la que ella y su padre, un ingeniero retirado de Plovdiv que la visitaba, construyeron la plataforma de la cama queen-size. En total, ella gastó U$S 1.500. Dado que ella querría reabrir su firma otra vez algún día, y no convendría derochar sus ahorros, su decoración frugal es otra forma de administración de riesgo.
Evidence of Ms. Georgieva’s cleverness is everywhere. She discovered she could turn a guest mattress on its side and slide it between her bed and the wall, where it functions as a kind of bolster pillow. To make the sleeping area feel like a room, she had three photographs of orchids, which she took on her Canon Rebel, blown up to 6-by-6-foot images, then hung them on the walls and ceiling surrounding the bed.
e La evidencia de la inteligencia de Ms. Georgieva está en todos lados. Descubrió que podía transformar un colchón para invitados y lo deslizó entre su cama y la pared, desde donde funciona como una especie de respaldo lateral. Para que el área del dormitorio se sintiera como una habitación, hizo ampliar tres fotografías de Orquídeas que tomó con su Canon Rebel a la medida de 2m x 2m y luego las colgó en las paredes y en el techo rodeando la cama.
“I need to check my appearance before I go out,” said Ms. Georgieva, 43, explaining the full-length mirror, a $9 item that she turned into a conceptual artwork, gluing tiny toys to its frame and painting it all white. She hung another mirror at an angle on the wall, so that it would disrupt the boxy lines of the apartment and send light from the lone window across the room. Below that mirror is a tiny dining table that can seat four, using two stools from Overstock.com and a bench she created by putting an upholstered board on top of a rarely used radiator.
e “Necesito checar mi apariencia antes de salir”, dice Ms. Georgieva, 43, explicando así la presencia del espejo de cuerpo entero, un item de U$S 9 que transformó en una obra de arte conceptual pegándole pequeños juguetes al marco y pintándolo de blanco. Colgó otro espejo en ángulo con la pared para interrumpir las líneas de las tuberías del departamento, e irradiar la luz proveniente de la única ventana por toda la habitación. Debajo de ese espejo se halla una pequeña mesita de comedor en la que se pueden sentar cuatro personas, usando dos banquetas de Overstock.com y un banco que creó colocando un tablero tapizado sobre un radiador raramente usado.
Another upholstered board became her desktop. She attached her cable box to the underside of the board, using leftover curtain rod brackets, so it doesn’t take up valuable desk space. “I’m sure everybody has the tools at home,” she said, of her ingenious cable-box solution. “It’s just that they don’t think about it.”
e Otro tablero tapizado se transformó en su escritorio. Ella incorporó la caja de cableado a la superficie inferior del tablero utilizando restos de soportes de barrales de cortina, de manera que no restaran valioso espacio al pequeño escritorio. “Estoy segura que todos tienen las herramientas en casa”, dice acerca de su ingeniosa solución para el cableado. “Lo que ocurre es que nadie piensa en ello”.
